Stockholm Economy: Continued growth during the second quarter

Stockholm’s business community continues to show growth in the second quarter of 2015. Wages are rising, more businesses are launching and unemployment is falling compared with the same period in 2014. These are the results of The Stockholm Economy Report for the second quarter 2015.

In both the city and county, profitability rose by over 5 percent in the second quarter this year, compared with the same period in 2014. In total, 5,321 new businesses were launched in the county, 3,011 of which were in the city. This is an increase of 3 percent for the county and 2 percent for the city.

“These are extremely encouraging numbers. We are thrilled and proud of Stockholm’s fantastic business community, which is showing strong, positive growth. Stockholm’s companies are creating new jobs and boosting the city’s attractiveness, especially in ICT, where Stockholm is one of the truly strong names in the world,” says Karin Wanngård, Commissioner of Finance in Stockholm.

Employment continued to demonstrate a positive trend on the labor market. During the second quarter of the year, unemployment fell by 4.3 percent in the county and by 4.5 percent in the city. The number of layoffs also fell, while the number of newly registered positions with the Swedish Public Employment Service continued to increase.

“Stockholm also continues to be an engine for growth in the second quarter of 2015. The city and county are both demonstrating dynamic business communities that create jobs and opportunities for Stockholm to keep growing,” says Olle Zetterberg, CEO of Stockholm Business Region.

In total, the number of available jobs increased by 26 percent in the county and 14 percent in the city, which corresponds to over 80,000 and 50,000 new jobs, respectively.

At the same time, Stockholm’s population continued to grow. Over the past four quarters, the county received over 32,000 new residents, which corresponds to an increase of 1 percent.
