Stockholm is an increasingly attractive market for retail expansion and is forecast to outperform other capital cities, according to the annual report Retail Guide Sweden 2020-2021. Despite the economic downturn following the pandemic, Stockholm remains an attractive market thanks to its growing population of curious consumers and early adopters with an appetite for new products.

The pandemic has split the Swedish retail sector in two. Home-related industries such as interior decoration and furniture, electronics and home hardware have boomed, while restrictions have put pressure on fashion and restaurants. Consumables are also growing strongly as a result of renewed interest in homemade food.

“The coronavirus pandemic will continue to have a profound effect on many parts of our society for years to come, but Stockholm continues to lead the way in innovation and competitiveness, making it an attractive region for international investors, global headquarters and talent. As one of Europe’s fastest expanding urban centers, we offer an interesting market for international retailers and brands,” says Hans Aspgren, Acting CEO at Invest Stockholm.

Swedes are highly inclined to seek out and buy products, services and brands that provide something new to the market.

“In Stockholm there are many fashion and retail brands that are changing the way we produce, purchase and consume clothes. But there is room for more. Stockholmers’ openness to new ideas make it an attractive market for international retailers with new and progressive concepts, especially if they are good for the environment,” says Karin Strassburg, Business Development Manager at Invest Stockholm.

As Stockholm’s population increases, so too do opportunities for international retail brands. High population growth has prompted considerable investment in new retail space developments and expansions of shopping centers and city districts, making Stockholm an easy entry point into the Swedish market.
