Amazon Web Services (AWS) continues to invest heavily in the Stockholm region. Just a few days after AWS announced that they opened their cloud region in Stockholm, it is confirmed that the cloud service giant purchases more land in Katrineholm and Eskilstuna to build additional data centers.
Recently, Amazon Web Services opened three data centers in Västerås, Eskilstuna and Katrineholm, in the Stockholm region. Now, AWS buys another 210,000 square meters of land for SEK 52.5 million in Katrineholm and an additional 123,000 square meters of land in a deal worth SEK 30.7 million in Eskilstuna.
Data Center Dynamics quoted AWS' CEO Andy Jassy in an article last week with regards to the opening of their data center region in Sweden:
“Tens of thousands of Nordic customers have been using AWS from regions around the world, but many have shared that they also wanted an AWS Region in the Nordics so they can easily operate their most latency-sensitive workloads for end-users in the Nordics while meeting any data sovereignty requirements. We’re excited to deliver our AWS Stockholm Region today to meet these customer requests.”, Andy Jassy, AWS' CEO, said.
A recent study commissioned by the Nordic Council of Ministers projects sharp growth for the Nordic data centre market until 2025. This seems to be no coincidence as the Nordics scores comparatively higher on factors such as ”Reliable power supply”, ”Low energy prices”, ”Political stability”, ”Faster time-to-market” and ”Abundance of energy and other resources” compared to more traditional European data centre regions. All factors that are deemed most important by data centre investors.
“The fact that AWS now purchases more land in Katrineholm and Eskilstuna, only days after they have opened their current data centers in Katrineholm, Eskilstuna and Västerås, sends a strong signal that the data center market is developing very strongly in the Stockholm region and that our region is a strong attraction point to international investors", says Anna Gissler, Acting CEO of Stockholm Business Region.
